A new 178-bedroom hotel located, on-site, at Birmingham airport.

The hotel was constructed using off-site container technology in order to reduce construction times. The innovative modular construction technique, with parts that included the guest rooms, were manufactured in the Far East and then shipped over for assembly.

SVM BSD developed the Stage 4 design to detailed level. This included all communal areas, service provisions for the bedrooms, plant room and bar.

Challenge
Time restrictions dictated a strict four week install period of the pods. This was down to the 6-week transit time, of the pods, from China.

The design of the hotel’s interiors were frequently evolving which meant lighting / lux levels had to be checked constantly. These changes were predominantly for the bar and restaurant area, so the frequency of monitoring was to ensure compliance with current regulations.

Allocating the routes of the high-level services also proved challenging due to the nature of the structure. To accommodate the heavy loads of the pod containers, the steel structures were a lot deeper than a traditional build. SVM BSD had to find an alternative design strategy to accommodate the high-level services.

Solution
A lot of time was dedicated to on-site monitoring to assist the M&E contractor with install.

Co-ordinating the location of the ground floor plant room with the plant room on the roof of the hotel was critical.

Both plant rooms had to be designed and positioned on the one side of the building to coincide with the riser details.

The ground floor plant room stores the water tank system, separate generator and LV switch room. The roof plant room area is considerably larger and supports the mechanical plant room (boilers) and external condensers.

The Outcome
The Hilton Garden Inn Birmingham Airport is located next to the passenger terminal.

The hotel provides facilities including 178 bedrooms, a 24-hour business centre, a fitness room and two meeting spaces spanning over 800 square feet. Additional amenities at the hotel include changing facilities, a large reception area and a bar and restaurant.
