The Capital City Project

The Capital City project was a 5-year long programme of refurbishment and extension, undertaken in collaboration with a specialist in-house team, to create The Galleries of Modern London.

We were appointed to carry out full mechanical, electrical, public health and lift designs for the duration of the project, with site supervision duties throughout. Our designs enabled the integration with the Museum’s existing building services as well as the shared heating and cooling plant for the Corporation of London’s adjacent building. All gallery spaces were air conditioned to international gallery standards.

The programme saw the addition of two major new facilities to the Museum: The City Gallery and the Clore Learning Centre. The City Gallery, which features a ‘shop window’ at street level, provides a showcase for some of the Museum’s best-loved objects, including the Lord Mayor’s Coach. The Learning Centre comprises classrooms, a theatre and education spaces.

MUSEUMS, GALLERIES & HERITAGE

Working to the exact demands of the conservation sector brings with it a unique set of challenges. We understand the need to work closely with conservation specialists and other stakeholders to optimise the balance between modernisation and retention.

Our wealth of experience and understanding of the complex issues involved delivering historic buildings enables us to fully appreciate that incorporating modern services can only be successfully achieved by treating historic buildings with the utmost respect. To achieve a great design, clients need a partner who understands the challenges and parallel objectives of these projects. It is only after an intensive period of investigation and research that we will sit down to prepare our collaboratively thought out designs.
