Maplefields SEN School

In line with its commitment to improve the provision of Special Educational Needs (SEN) facilities, Northampton County Council wanted to build a new primary and secondary school in Corby that would cater for children aged 3 -16.

Challenge
Maplefields was one of the first schools to be built using the newly revised Department of Children’s Schools and Families (DCSF) criteria for Carbon Emissions Reductions (60% lower than 2002 allowed levels).

Energy efficiency and a “Very Good” BREEAM rating were the key objectives.

Solution
As the appointed M&E consultants we wanted to ensure the project achieved the desired “Very Good” BREEAM rating, by meeting the carbon emissions targets through a combination of fuel boilers and solar thermal panels.

All M&E services were designed to utilise the latest low energy building techniques including:

 > Natural ventilation with heavy thermal mass power factor correction
 > Voltage reduction
 > Fluorescent and LED lighting
 > Low energy system pump and fans

The building also featured additional sustainable initiatives such as a sedum roof and rainwater harvesting.

The Outcome
Maplefields SEN school is now an inspiring, efficient environment that is transforming special needs provision in north Northamptonshire as well as meeting the toughest environmental standards.

EDUCATION

Designing building services that are conducive to successful study is a fundamental part of our approach within the education sector.

Producing technical solutions that meet the specific needs in primary, secondary, and higher education. High performance facilities that are cost-effective to build, run and maintain, using low carbon energy-efficient technology & ethical construction materials.

It is also important that buildings are engaging, pleasant environments, equipped with quality systems, therefore stimulating and comfortable spaces for staff and students alike.

Good thermal performance, ventilation and lighting design all make the learning environment function more effectively. Our years of work in this sector, has taught us how to balance these inter-related issues to provide the perfect conditions for the best educational outcomes.
